Goal: In this exercise you will become familiar with the following concepts: table of contents, symbols, color schemes, classification, normalize, color ramps, and attributes.
At the end of this exercise you will know how to:
- Open the legend editor
- Select a legend type
- Select a value
- Classify
- Normalize
- Select colors, color ramps and apply them

Step 1. Open ArcGIS and add the Countbnd.shp to your view

Note: By default, ArcGIS assigns a single color to to all the counties (this is the single symbol legend type). You want to display the counties by population, so you will open the Legend Editor and design a new legend.
Step 2. Left Click the Countbnd.shp symbol
(in this case the green box) to display the Symbol Selector box.
Options:
- Fill Color: displays a Color Palette Box for the active layer, Countbnd.shp or the counties.
- Outline Width: allows the user to change the width of the dividing features, in this case the boundaries between counties.
- Outline Color: allows the user to change the color of the boundaries, in this case black is the default color.

Click on a fill color that you would like to represent the counties. Take a moment and change the outline width and the outline color. Click OK to apply these changes. Next we will change the symbol meaning

Step 3. Left click "centre.shp" symbol to display the Symbol Selector box
(in this case the blue line). The Symbol Selector box will give you options to change what your line means (Highway, Railroad, River, etc.). In this case the river symbol is already displayed.

Next we will change the colors to represent population ranges for the counties in Pennsylvania. We will do this by adding color ramps to countbnd.shp

Step 4. If you wanted to show the population by county, you would need to define quantities as colors. This arranges and displays the data in specific categories. Right click on countbnd.shp in the table of contents. This will bring up a box of choices. At the bottom of the box is properties, click on this choice.

Step 5. Scroll across the top to the Symbology tab. This will allow you to change the representation of multiple symbols in the table of contents: Features, Categories, Quantities, Charts, Multiple Attributes

Step 6. To represent counties by population as a function of color, we will need to choose the Quantities option. Under this option select Graduated Colors. The Value drop-down list allows you to choose from any of the attributes for the Countbnd.shp. We will choose the POP1990 option, since we want the colors to represent 1990's population.
Note: ArcMAP will automatically choose a Color Ramp and Classification breaks for your project. Both of these functions can be altered to your own specific needs.

Step 7. Click OK. Now each county is shown as a color that represents a range of population values.
